When Insulation Has to Come Out

Insulation removal is needed less often than people think, but when it is needed, there is no shortcut. Dry, clean attic insulation can stay; we seal around it and add more. Insulation that has been soaked by a roof leak or flood water, has mold growing in it, is full of rodent droppings or is so deep we cannot reach the ceiling leaks under it has to come out.

After the 2026 flooding

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay reported prolonged flooding on the west and north sides of Lake Winnebago in April 2026 and record Wolf River crests upstream. Basements and crawl spaces that took on water may still have wet insulation in rim joists, walls or floor framing. Wet fiberglass and cellulose do not dry well in place and can hold moisture against wood, so we remove it and let the framing dry before reinsulating.

How removal works

In attics we run a large vacuum hose from a collection unit outside, so loose fill goes straight into bags. Batts are bagged by hand. Then we seal every bypass and put in new insulation.

Vermiculite and old foam

Vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown fill in some older attics, can contain asbestos. We do not disturb it; we recommend testing and, if needed, an abatement contractor. Spray foam that has to go is cut and scraped out, which takes more time than vacuuming.

Insulation Removal Questions

My basement flooded in April. Does the insulation need to come out?

If batts or loose fill got wet, usually yes. They hold water against the framing. We remove them, let the wood dry, then reinsulate.

How much does insulation removal cost?

HomeAdvisor lists $1 to $2 per square foot, with typical jobs around $600 to $1,200, and removal plus replacement averaging about $1,852.

Why are people removing spray foam?

Usually because it was sprayed where it should not be, such as over a roof deck that needs inspection, or because of a bad mix.

Can I remove attic insulation myself?

It is dusty, hot work, and vermiculite must never be disturbed without testing. We can quote it so you can compare.
